The most recent series of X-Men Marvel Legends Series figures has been a really interesting mix of characters from different teams and eras. You've got four A-list big guns (Wolverine, Cyclops, Gambit, and Nightcrawler) from different teams and eras (X-Treme X-Men, X-Factor, Age of Apocalypse, and X-Force), and three 90's era creations who haven't had Legends releases before (Marrow, Husk, and Fabian Cortez). It's a real potpourri! Age of Apocalypse Gambit was a really nice surprise for this series as whole the Age of Apocalypse storyline is quite well loved by many, the two series of Marvel Legends figures based on it didn't seem to sell as quickly as most mutant focused series and thus ended up easily found on clearance at GameStop, Target, and Ollie's. They look great together and I'd love to see Hasbro continue to add to them little by little. Gambit is an excellent addition and is always a hit, right? We've also rarely had Gambit figures in any outfit other than his classic trench coat wearing look. Ready to check out the AoA Gambit? Then join me after the break...
The Facts:
Height: 6 1/2th inches
Articulation: Swivel/hinge ankles, double hinged knees, swivel thighs, ball-jointed hips, swivel waist, hinged torso, swivel/hinge shoulders w/ pectoral hinges, bicep swivels, double hinged elbows, swivel/hinge wrists, hinged neck, and a ball jointed head.
Accessories: 4 swappable hands, cape, leg band, staff, and right leg for Nemesis/ Holocaust build-a-figure.
Non-Scalper Price: $25 dollars
The Positives:
* I like the look of the Age of Apocalypse costumes overall and Gambit continues the trend of bold colors that are reminiscent of his classic look, but also different. He's wearing a form fitting bodysuit with brown padding on the sleeves, brown gloves, brown kneepads, and brown boots, a belt with a few pouches on it (looks like a Batman utility belt from that era in a different color scheme), and a red cape/ scarf hybrid. It's a bit hectic, but it does fit the desolate, dystopian future look of the series while also making Gambit feel a bit more like a space-faring hero/ thief. Everything looks great here and it all comes together quite well.
* Gambit gets a new portrait and it's quite strong. I'm jealous of this dude's hair1 It's fantastic and kept out of his eyes with a blue bandanna. He definitely looks like he could be fronting a late 80s/ early 90s rock band. The portrait is great, giving Gambit a steely gaze and a bit of stubble.
* His boots are very cool, too. They're asymmetrical and have different wrappings and different ring placements on both sides. Are these homemade boots or two random boots that were just close enough that Gambit found? Maybe the Age of Apocalypse just had the same fashion sense as the 1990s era McFarlane Toys figures?
* I'm a huge fan of short capes like this with hoods and scarf like fronts. Gambit's is just a solid plastic piece that fits over his head, but it does look good. Soft goods would have been really cool, but that's not really part of the Marvel Legends aesthetic, is it? I'd wear a cape/ cloak/ scarf like this everyday if it were socially acceptable.
* Do you have any other male Marvel Legends figures on your shelf? Then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect with Gambit. He's a brand new figure made with newer styled parts, so that means no boot swivel, but he does have all pinless joints and the pectoral hinges/ butterfly joints. While many/ most of the Age of Apocalypse figures had pinless joints, a quick glance at my shelf seems to show Iceman as the only one with pectoral hinges, so it does show how something that was once novel is now becoming the norm.
* Gambit has four swappable hands: A right hand for gripping his staff, a left hand making a cool gesture, and a pair of fists for doing some punching.
* As usual, Gambit comes with his staff. It's kind of a signature weapon for him so Hasbro pretty much had to include it.
* He also comes with the right leg for the Build-a-Figure of Holocaust/ Nemesis. This is a pretty decent sized guy and seems to be a pretty popular Build-a-Figure. I'm excited to review him sometime soon.
Gambit might not be the most in-demand in this series (then again, maybe he is?) but fans of Remy LeBeau and the Age of Apocalypse storyline should be pretty excited for him. He looks great with that subset and is just a cool figure. I do wish he had some more energy effects or something, but he's still a solid buy, plus you get the bonus BAF part. We're seeing fewer and fewer BAF waves these days, it seems, so getting a pretty exciting BAF is a reason to celebrate. He's a Great figure and one of the figures from this series I've seen the least in stores.
